The Tabasco British Oyster Opening Champonship 2015
I love oysters. I love the way they taste of the sea and the zinc kick that gets your juices flowing. So when asked to attend The Tabasco British Oyster Opening Champonship 2015 at Wright Brothers in Spitalfields Market I didn’t have to think too hard about it.
Shuckers were in attendance from some of Britain’s top seafood restaurants and as we feasted on spicy rosemary-infused Bloody Marys and fabulous oyster canapés we were given a run down of the competitors and rules by 2009 Masterchef winner Mat Follas who was MCing the event. Points were to be deducted for poor presentation and oysters had to be placed upright, properly severed and with no blood, grit or shell in evidence.
After four competitive rounds Fredrik Lindfors, of The Fish Shop in Kensington, comes out on top, shucking 30 native Loch Ryan oysters in three minutes and 55 seconds. This seven times winner’s technique involves downing a pint of Guinness to steady his nerves and as part of his prize he will travel to the next world championships.
We all cheered and celebrated his victory with more champagne and dozens of the plump, tasty little oysters laced with just a little drop of Tabasco to give them a kick. This is a lovely event. Thanks for the invitation!
