Their Executive Chef Russell Ford has decided to launch a ‘Dish of the Month’ for 2016 showcasing the best in British produce and Fiona and I were invited along to review February’s offering.
I was particularly excited because the dish in question was a roasted whole turbot for two with trumpet mushrooms, roast winter vegetables, spinach gratin & a smooth potato mousseline (£65). The turbot really is the king of fishes with an unrivalled flavour and this was a beautiful specimen that had been perfectly cooked. The fish came with the trompettes slathered all over it and the sides turned up in little cast iron pots like little soldiers guarding their monarch. We washed down our fish with a very decent bottle of Gavi de Gavi.
After such a full on main course we could only manage the chocolate fondant with peanut butter ice cream. This was an exercise in indulgence for which I will pay a price. It was delicious. March’s Dish of the Month is ‘Roast rack & slow-cooked neck of Devon lamb with Spring vegetables for£20and would be well worth the trip.
