The Tabasco British Oyster Opening Championship 2014
I love oysters. I love the way they taste of the sea and the zinc kick that gets your juices flowing. I love slurping them down and the tough decision of whether to add lemon, tabasco, sauce mignonette, horseradish or lemongrass. So when asked to attend the 22nd Tabasco British Oyster Opening Championship at the Holborn Dining Rooms in Holborn’s new luxury Rosewood Hotel it seemed like an excellent idea.
Shuckers were in attendance from some of Britain’s top seafood restaurants including Bentleys, Wiltons, Bibendum, English’s, Scott’s and Riddle & Finns and for the first time there were two women competing. Fueled by Pommery champagne the competitors had to open and neatly present 30 native Loch Ryne Oysters as fast as possible. Winner Hugo de La Rosa (above) from Wright Brothers won the right to represent the UK at the world championship in Galway; guests, winners, losers and attending celebs such as Wayne Sleep and top chefs Brian Turner and Jeremy Lee celebrated his victory with more champagne and dozens of the plump, tasty little oysters.
