The Hedonist has a healthy degree of scepticism about most medical interventions, preferring to believe in the undoubted curative properties of the dry Martini, but the offer of a treatment at the chi yu wellness centre in Marylebone (Chi Yu is the Japanese for healing) seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

The centre is a calming urban oasis that feels authentically Japanese and after an initial health assessment carried out by my charming therapist, Mami Tsang, I was led into one of the treatment rooms where I undressed and lay down on the treatment bench. At this point I have to make an admission. The Hedonist is a runner and so I had a variety of leg and foot related niggles as well as the stresses and strains of everyday pleasure seeking for Mami to contend with. The therapists at Chi Yu are all trained in a variety of Western and Eastern disciplines and I chose the chi yu integrated therapy to allow Mami to the best opportunity to restore my natural energy flow.

The mood is set with the lights being dimmed and minimalist shakuhachi and koto music playing in the background. The treatment itself combined acupuncture, aromatherapy, thai yoga massage, acupressure meridian massage (shiatsu) and deep tissue massage, and the experience was genuinely wonderful. The different techniques were combined into a seamless flow and as needles were inserted, oils applied, and joints and muscles were stretched and massaged I floated off into a zone of deep relaxation that I probably haven’t experienced since the 1970s…. The integrated, holistic approach makes a lot of sense when you are being treated as it allows any issues to be dealt with using the most appropriate techniques and by the end of the session I felt fantastic. My ankles, feet and knees, which had been sore prior to the treatment, felt much better and I suddenly became aware of how much tension there normally is in the rest of my body.

The centre provides a wide range of oriental and complementary therapies as well as holistic beauty therapies including their signature Chidoriya Japanese Facial which uses Chidoriya Japanese Skin care products in combination with chi yu’s bespoke Matcha green tea mask and organic facial oil, Japanese facial massage and jade stone rollers. If Marylebone isn’t your usual stamping ground then why not take a trip to visit chi yu as it’s really worth a detour, but take care, I was so relaxed at the end of the session that I managed to take the wrong train home!
